Australia has released its 15-player squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup next month, and several well-known players were left out of the roster.

Mitchell Marsh will lead the team as planned after Cricket Australia confirmed his appointment as the team’s permanent T20 captain on Wednesday morning. During the previous 12 months, Marsh had previously skippered Australia in three Twenty20 International series.
Australia team for the 2024 T20 World Cup does not include Steven Smith, one of their best three-format batsmen of the generation, or Jake Fraser-McGurk, their brightest young T20 batting talent. Instead, selectors chose to include Ashton Agar, a second specialist spinner, and Cameron Green, a backup all-rounder, to give Australia more flexibility throughout the competition.
Despite not having participated in a T20I since the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, left-arm spinner Ashton Agar receives a return, and all-rounders Marcus Stoinis, Tim David, and Cameron Green join Glenn Maxwell in the final squad.
Smith was left out of a World Cup team for the first time in ten years in any capacity, so his exclusion is less shocking. Despite having the opportunity to open in two Twenty20 Internationals against India in November of last year and two more against New Zealand in February, he was unable to force his way beyond Australia’s current top three.
With the exception of Inglis, who is the backup wicketkeeper and has batted quite successfully at almost every position in the order, Green covers for the injury-prone Marsh and Stoinis.
After two incredible BBL seasons and some strong performances in his few T20I outings over the past 12 months, Matthew Short was also unlucky to miss out.
