West Indies will be led by Rovman Powell in the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
West Indies team for the 2024 T20 World Cup :The 15-man West Indies team for the 2024 T20 World Cup includes Shimron Hetmyer. Additionally called up is 24-year-old fast bowler Shamar Joseph, who has only participated in three Twenty20 matches and has not yet made his debut for his country in the format.
After missing his trip, Hetmyer was removed off the 2022 T20 World Cup roster. He participated in the England and India series of last year before being left out of the white-ball selections for the Australia trip and was benched for the last two Twenty20 Internationals in the England series.
Despite winning the T20 World Cup twice (in 2012 and 2016), West Indies’ performance in the previous two tournaments was lacklustre. Under Kieron Pollard’s leadership, they won just one game during the group stage in 2021 and were eliminated. Under Nicholas Pooran’s leadership, they missed out on the main round in Australia a year later. They also failed to get past the qualifier, which prevented them from being eligible for the 2023 ODI World Cup in India.
After missing the T20I series against Australia, Shimron Hetmyer returns. With the Rajasthan Royals in the present Indian Premier League, he has been in fine form, amassing 83 runs with a strike rate of 184.44 in four innings while filling in as the finisher.
Windies skipped Kyle Mayers, a member of the team during the Australia series, in favour of a lower-order batsman rather than an opener. With players like Nicholas Pooran, Andre Russell, Shimron Hetmyer, Powell, Jason Holder, Sherfane Rutherford, and Romario Shepherd among their many big hitters and all-rounders, the Windies have a wealth of alternatives.
The spin-bowling team consists of Gudakesh Motie and Akeal Hossain, while vice-captain Joseph will lead the pace battery with Joseph’s assistance.
“We had a very long discussion with the situation of the batting line-up,” he said. “I want to state very clearly that our focus has always been (on) roles – roles that we want people to play. The situation of someone like Shamar Joseph, you really can’t question someone like him, we saw him in Australia. He ticked the boxes for us.
“It was some very close decisions, regarding the selection of Kyle Mayers and Shimron Hetmyer – but we looked at who we wanted the extra batter batting down the order.”
