Lizaad Williams, a South African pace wonder, has joined the Delhi Capitals (DC) side as a substitute for Harry Brook, who withdrew from the IPL due to family issues.
Brook, the England superstar, was purchased by DC for INR 4 crore, but the powerhouse batter withdrew out of the league owing to the death of his grandmother. With DC’s bowling constantly unable to provide the goods, purchasing Williams might prove to be a wise decision for the organisation.
Who is Lizaad Williams?
Lizaad Williams, a South African fast bowler, was signed by the Delhi Capitals on Monday to replace batter Harry Brook in the present Indian Premier League after the Englishman withdrew to mourn the loss of his grandmother. Williams, 30, has played two Tests, four One-Day Internationals, and eleven Twenty20 Internationals for South Africa since his international debut in 2021. He has joined Delhi Capitals on a basic fee of Rs 50 lakh.
Lizaad Williams has 106 wickets in 83 T20s with a bowling average of 19.76. Lizz made his South African debut in April 2022 and has since played two Tests, four One-Day Internationals, and eleven Twenty20 Internationals.
He was a member of South Africa’s 2023 ODI World Cup team and played one match against Bangladesh.
He got 15 wickets for the Johannesburg Super Kings in the SA20, ending fourth in the wicket-takers list.
Lizaad Williams, a hit-the-deck bowler, has the potential to be the X factor for the Capitals, who desperately need a wicket-taker. Anrich Nortje has been annihilated in every game, and Williams might make his DC debut in the following encounter.
Lizaad Williams’ arrival is opportune for the Capitals, since Marsh has a hamstring issue that has sidelined him for at least a week.
Brook, who was recruited by Delhi Capitals for Rs 4 crore, withdrew from the league when his grandma passed away in February.
“I can confirm that I have made the very difficult decision not to play in the upcoming IPL. I was so excited to be picked by Delhi Capitals and was so looking forward to joining up with everyone. Whilst I don’t think I should need to share my personal reasons behind this decision, I know there will be many asking why. So I do want to share this.”
“I lost my Grandmother last month – she was a rock to me and I spent a huge amount of my childhood in her home; my attitude to life and love for cricket was shaped by her and my late grandfather. When at home, there would hardly be a day go by that didn’t include seeing her. It makes me so happy that she was able to see me play cricket for England. I’m proud that she could collect some of the awards I have won over the last couple of years when I couldn’t be there and I know she enjoyed doing that.”
“I made the decision to leave the India test tour the night before we flew from Abu Dhabi to India because I was told for the first time that my Grandmother was ill and didn’t have long left. Now that she has passed my family & I are grieving and I need to be around them. Over the last few years I have learned to prioritise my mental wellbeing and that of my family’s, honestly nothing is more important to me than family. So whilst this may come as surprising to some, I know it’s the right decision for me. I’m young and hope to have many, many more years of cricket to come which I intend to make the absolute most of.”
