Australian bowler Jason Behrendorff will miss the Indian Premier League after fracturing his leg in a shocking accident while preparing at the WACA.

The 33-year-old, who signed with the Mumbai Indians for AU$135,000, broke his left fibula while hitting in the nets last week. The ball missed his pad and hit him right above the left ankle, but he doesn’t need surgery.

Jason Behrendorff, an Australian fast bowler who was a member of the Mumbai Indians squad, stated on Tuesday that he was unhappy to miss this year’s IPL after breaking his leg in a “freak training incident”. On Monday, England’s Luke Wood replaced Behrendorff, a left-arm pacer, in the MI lineup.

Last season, Behrendorff was an important element of the MI pace line, which lacked the star power of Indian fast Jasprit Bumrah and English bowler Jofra Archer. He helped MI to the playoffs with 14 wickets in 12 matches, averaging 27.64. Behrendorff was named Australia’s best men’s T20 player in 2023 after impressive performances for the Baggy Greens in the shortest format.

“Behrendorff was batting in the nets at the WACA ground last Thursday ahead of departing to India to play in the IPL with Mumbai Indians when he suffered a fractured left fibula after a ball missed his pad and struck him flush just above the left ankle,” according to the newspaper.

The news of Behrendorff’s unavailability comes only a few days before MI’s first IPL 2024 match against the Gujarat Titans on March 24 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The potential of Behrendorff teaming with players like as Jasprit Bumrah and Gerald Coetzee would be sorely missed by the Mumbai Indians’ massive following in the upcoming season of the event.

Luke Wood joins MI for ₹50 lakh.

The 28-year-old made his international debut in 2022, after his first-class debut in 2014. He has extensive experience in franchise cricket, having played for Trent Rockets in The Hundred. Meanwhile, in the BPL 2022-23, he played for Sylhet Strikers and was a major component in their run to the final, which they ultimately lost. Wood would join MI for ₹50 lakh.

Wood is a left-arm bowler who has appeared for England in five T20Is and two ODIs. He has also taken eight T20I wickets during his career.
