Considering where the Gujarat Titans and Punjab Kings are in the points standings, this game really seems like a make-or-break affair. Sitting atop the table, these clubs have only achieved two victories (in Punjab) and three in Gujarat out of their first seven games.

Regaining this place and continuing on to make the playoffs will be a difficult job. Both sides have performed really poorly and have frequently fallen short when it comes to using the ball and the bat.

The entire game has not been able to be produced. Gujarat is obviously missing the team spirit and collaborative nature that they had in earlier seasons.

Punjab is also unable to play to its full capacity despite having a team with an amazing bench strength. After four meetings, the all-time head-to-head record between these clubs is 2-2.

Punjab Kings :

The top order in particular has let the Punjab Kings batting group down in the opening half of the competition. Kings needed a new opening duo since Dhawan was sidelined by a shoulder ailment and Bairstow was terribly inconsistent.

In the previous game, they tested Atharva Taide, but the ruse failed. The player who replaced Bairstow, Rilee Rossouw, also failed to improve his reputation in the season’s opening game. Liam Livingstone had another underwhelming at-bat.

And the task of clearing up fell back to Ashutosh Sharma and Shashank Singh. And they complied. Given how well their wafer-thin top and middle order are playing, they can’t afford to take it easy. The two have been excellent at scoring runs in the late order.

Punjab Kings are not benefiting at all from Arshdeep Singh’s inconsistent bowling. Arshdeep and Rabada are bowling under duress as Harshal Patel and Sam Curran aren’t doing anything to stop rival batting or take wickets. And their erratic performance shows it. While Harpreet Brar is exerting some control in the middle overs, he still has a significant obstacle to surmount in terms of wickets.

Gujarat Titans :

The dismal 89 runs that Gujarat Titans scored against DC this season serve as a stark reminder of how awful they have been at the bat this season.

With the exception of Gill and Sudarshan, none of the other hitters has demonstrated consistent bat-related contribution. Tewatia has amassed an estimated 110 runs thus far, while the other players have failed to achieve more than 99 runs. The competition is halfway over, but batsmen like David Miller, who was in excellent form the previous year, and Vijay Shankar have been dreadfully out of form.

They have continuously changed their starting lineup, but sadly, none of their tactics—trying Williamson in place of Omarzai, Abhinav Manohar in place of Saha, and Shahrukh Khan as an impact player—have proven effective.

Their attempts to work with the bowling group have also been fruitless. Mohit Sharma is still bowling within himself, despite his respectable eight wicket haul. Since returning to the team after a back ailment, Rashid Khan doesn’t appear to be a very dangerous player. Although Noor Ahmad has shown promise in the little opportunities he has had so far, it is still unclear why he does not start in the starting lineup.

Their plan to replace Umesh Yadav with Sandeep Warrier flopped. Apart from Mohit and Rashid, Umesh was the only bowler to have taken at least five wickets. The Gujarat Titans have made some odd choices this season, but they still have seven games left to do things right and still have a chance to win this campaign
