KKR vs SRH, IPL 2026 Match 6 Preview: Can Eden Gardens Save Both Camps from an Embarrassing Start?

Match: IPL 2026, League Stage – Match 6 Date: Thursday, 2 April 2026 Venue: Eden Gardens, Kolkata Time: 7:30 PM IST | 2:00 PM GMT

match detail

There's something uniquely electric about Eden Gardens when the stakes are high. And with both Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad already staring at a loss apiece inside the opening week of IPL 2026, this Thursday evening fixture carries more weight than a typical early-season encounter. Lose this one, and questions start getting louder. Win it, and suddenly the season feels wide open again.

Both teams have already demonstrated they can bat. The problem is neither has figured out how to stop the other side from doing the same. If that trend continues tonight, Eden Gardens could well produce a Saturday night-style blockbuster on a Thursday.

Current Form and Season Context

KKR's campaign started on a frustrating note. Despite posting an impressive 220 on the board against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede – anchored by captain Ajinkya Rahane's 67 off 40 balls, and Angkrish Raghuvanshi's 51 off 29 – their bowling attack was dismantled. MI's Ryan Rickelton and Rohit Sharma stitched together an opening stand of 148 in just 11.5 overs, and that was essentially the game done. For a franchise whose spin-heavy attack has been one of the most feared in the IPL for years, that kind of powerplay carnage was alarming.

SRH's start wasn't much better. Against RCB in Bengaluru, stand-in captain Ishan Kishan blazed 80 off just 35 balls in a display that reminded everyone exactly why SRH paid top dollar for him. The problem was that a total of 201 still wasn't enough, and their bowling attack conceded too freely in the chase. Both KKR and SRH posted 200-plus totals in their opening matches, yet walked away defeated, exposing bowling attacks that struggled to defend under pressure.

So both camps arrive at Eden Gardens with the same internal conversation happening in their dressing rooms: the runs are there, but the discipline isn't.

Eden Gardens – Pitch Report and Venue Stats

Eden Garden

Eden Gardens is one of the most iconic cricket grounds in the world, but the pitch dynamics here have shifted considerably over the years. During the early years of the IPL, the ground was synonymous with spin, with KKR making the most of Sunil Narine and others. That has changed significantly, and these days the surface is heavily batter-friendly.

Chasing at Eden Gardens has become the preferred approach in recent IPL seasons. The ground even witnessed the highest successful run-chase in T20 cricket history, when Punjab Kings chased down 262. Dew also tends to influence second-innings batting, making conditions progressively easier as the night goes on.

The average first innings score at the venue stands around 182, with teams having successfully chased targets of up to 196. Captains winning the toss are widely expected to opt to field, knowing that setting a total here has become increasingly difficult to defend.

This will be Kolkata's 101st IPL match at the venue. The last IPL game played here saw CSK edge past KKR by two wickets on May 7, 2025, with a four-wicket haul from spinner Noor Ahmad proving the difference.

Head-to-Head Record: KKR Hold the Edge

The overall head-to-head between these two sides is firmly in KKR's favour. KKR lead the all-time series 20-10 across 30 IPL meetings.

At Eden Gardens specifically, the gap is even more pronounced. In 11 meetings at this ground, KKR hold an 8-3 win-loss record against SRH.

The most recent contest between them at Eden Gardens ended in a comprehensive KKR win. They beat SRH by 80 runs last season, dismissing the visitors for just 120 in a chase of 201, with both Varun Chakravarthy and Vaibhav Arora taking three wickets each.

KKR have won four of the last five IPL matches against SRH, although SRH did inflict a heavy 110-run defeat on them in the most recent encounter – a game played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

KKR Probable Playing XI and Player Analysis

Finn Allen, Rahul Tripathi, Ajinkya Rahane (c), Rinku Singh, Rovman Powell, Sunil Narine, Rachin Ravindra, Cameron Green, Varun Chakravarthy, Matheesha Pathirana, Umran Malik

Finn Allen – The Entertainer If there is one player in this KKR side capable of single-handedly shifting the momentum of a game in the first six overs, it is Finn Allen. The New Zealand opener is in the form of his life. He has accumulated 732 T20 runs in 2026 across 17 innings at a strike rate of 193.13 – no batter in the format has scored more this calendar year. What makes this even more compelling is his history at this specific ground. It was at Eden Gardens where Allen produced an unbeaten 33-ball 100 in the 2026 T20 World Cup semi-final, as New Zealand chased down 170 in 12.5 overs. SRH's bowling unit will know exactly what is coming, and Allen will still be very hard to stop.

Ajinkya Rahane – Captain's Milestone Rahane has reinvented himself as a T20 cricketer over the last couple of seasons and is in excellent batting form. This game will mark his 200th IPL appearance, making him the 11th player to reach that milestone in the tournament. He enters this match with a notable powerplay record too – averaging 77.71 with a strike rate of 170.5 in the powerplay phase since 2023. However, Jaydev Unadkat has dismissed him four times in six IPL innings, which is a battle worth watching closely.

Sunil Narine – The Old Warrior Few bowlers have dominated any one fixture the way Narine has dominated SRH. Across 27 IPL games against them, Narine has taken 17 wickets at an economy of 6.73. At Eden Gardens specifically, he has taken 10 wickets against SRH in 10 matches at just 24.10 with an economy of 6.17 – his best figures reading 3/26. After a quiet game in Mumbai, expect Narine to be fired up back on home soil.

Varun Chakravarthy – The Mystery Man Varun has been exceptional at Eden Gardens, taking 34 wickets across 24 games at the venue, underlining KKR's continued reliance on spin through the middle overs. Against a SRH top order packed with natural spin-bashers, his variations and mystery will need to be at their best.

Rinku Singh – The Finisher Rinku's reputation in IPL death-over situations needs no introduction. His composure and ability to hit boundaries under pressure makes him indispensable in close finishes. In a match where the game could well go down to the wire, his value cannot be overstated.

Rovman Powell – Power in the Middle The West Indian brings explosive hitting ability in the middle to lower-order phase. Alongside Rinku, he provides KKR with a destructive lower-middle order that can push totals well past competitive par.

Cameron Green – The All-Round Option Green adds genuine depth to the batting while offering the option of medium pace. He is unlikely to bowl against SRH, which further underlines the concern around KKR's pace bowling balance in this game.

Rachin Ravindra – Steady Hand Ravindra brings craft and intelligence to the KKR middle order. He is not a high-risk player, but his ability to rotate strike, build partnerships, and accelerate when needed makes him a reliable option at any stage of an innings.

Matheesha Pathirana – Injury Cloud Remains The Sri Lankan quick is KKR's most exciting pace prospect, but his availability is uncertain. KKR are still waiting on Pathirana to recover from an injury he picked up during the 2026 T20 World Cup. If he plays, he adds serious firepower. If not, KKR's pace attack looks exposed.

Umran Malik – Raw Pace Umran brings the kind of raw speed that no batter in the SRH line-up will take lightly. On a surface that offers pace and bounce, his ability to hit the deck hard can be a genuine weapon, particularly against batters who like to free their arms.

SRH Probable Playing XI and Player Analysis

SRH team

Travis Head, Ishan Kishan (wk, c), Abhishek Sharma, Heinrich Klaasen, Liam Livingstone, Nitish Reddy, Harshal Patel, Pat Cummins (c), Shivam Mavi, Jaydev Unadkat, Kusal Mendis

Travis Head – Always Dangerous Head is one of the most feared T20 openers in the world right now. His ability to take on any bowling attack from ball one is what makes SRH such a dangerous side even in the most difficult conditions. If he gets going in the powerplay, Eden Gardens could be in for a big total.

Ishan Kishan – The Captain's Knock Standing in for the injured Pat Cummins, Kishan has embraced the captaincy with both hands. His stunning 80 off 35 against RCB was the knock of a man who is completely in the zone. He is the heartbeat of this SRH batting order and will be looking to anchor the innings around his explosive game.

Abhishek Sharma – Against His Nemesis? Abhishek has good numbers against KKR in general but has historically struggled to dominate at Eden Gardens the way he does elsewhere. He has managed 166 runs against KKR from 11 IPL matches at a strike rate of 129.68 – solid but below his usual high-octane standards. With Narine and Varun waiting to bowl at him, this is a key tactical contest.

Heinrich Klaasen – The Finisher If you're looking for someone who can change a T20 game in the space of ten balls, it is Klaasen. He bats with an aggression and intelligence that is rare – capable of targeting both spinners and pacers with equal precision. KKR's bowlers will need a plan for him.

Liam Livingstone – X-Factor Livingstone brings all-round value. He can clear the rope from the word go, contributes with off-spin, and thrives on being an impact player in the middle order. His inclusion adds serious unpredictability to the SRH batting card.

Nitish Kumar Reddy – The Young Star Nitish has developed into one of the most exciting young talents in Indian cricket, and his IPL form reflects that. He is capable of turning innings around with clean, powerful hitting, and his genuine medium pace gives SRH an additional bowling option.

Harshal Patel – Death Bowling Specialist Harshal's variations – the slower ball, the off-cutter, the one that holds on the pitch – make him one of the hardest death bowlers to hit. At a venue where batters look to attack, his cleverness can be a vital asset in keeping totals in check during the final overs.

Pat Cummins – Racing to Be Fit SRH captain Pat Cummins is racing against time to recover from injury and is hoping to return midway through the season. His presence would transform this SRH bowling attack. Without him, the side feels a pace short of their best.

Shivam Mavi – Pace and Aggression Mavi gives SRH options with the new ball and in the middle overs. His willingness to bowl short and test batters with pace suits the Eden Gardens conditions well.

Jaydev Unadkat – The Experienced Head Unadkat offers craft and variety, and as mentioned, has a specific record against Rahane. He knows how to use the conditions and won't be fazed by the big occasion.

Kusal Mendis – Depth Option Mendis rounds out the XI with batting depth and wicket-keeping backup, giving SRH tactical flexibility.

Key Battles to Watch

Finn Allen vs SRH Pace Attack This is the contest that could define the first six overs. If Allen gets going, KKR can set a platform that puts every other batsman under minimal pressure. SRH's pacers need to be on the money from ball one.

Sunil Narine vs Travis Head Two match-winners who operate in completely different ways. Head will come after Narine from the outset. Narine will back his variations and his record at this ground. One of them is going to come out on top in what should be an absorbing sub-duel.

Varun Chakravarthy vs Ishan Kishan Varun's mystery deliveries against Kishan's attacking instinct – this middle-overs battle could genuinely decide the complexion of the innings for whoever is batting.

Umran Malik vs SRH Top Order Raw pace against some of the game's best T20 batters. If Umran can find his radar early, he has the tools to unsettle even the best in the business.

Prediction

Eden Gardens historically favours the chasing side and dew will make that even more likely tonight. Both teams will want to bowl first, and KKR – as the home side with two world-class spinners who thrive at this ground – will back themselves to defend whatever they are set.

KKR's greater home ground advantage, their formidable head-to-head record at this venue, and the form of Finn Allen make them the slight favourites heading into this contest. However, SRH are never a team you can write off, and Travis Head plus Ishan Kishan have already shown in 2026 that they can chase anything.

Predicted winner: Kolkata Knight Riders – but expect a close game.
